 Clinical Significance: Serum albumin measurements are used in the monitoring and treatment of numerous diseases involving primarily the liver and kidneys. Its main value lies in the follow-up therapy where improvement in the serum albumin level is the best sign of successful medical treatment. There may also be a loss of albumin in the gastrointestinal tract, in the urine by the damaged kidney or direct loss of albumin through the skin. More than 50% of patients with gluten enteropathy have depressed albumin. Look for increase in hemoglobin, hematocrit in such patients. Low albumin is found with use of IV fluids, rapid hydration, overhydration; cirrhosis, other liver disease, including chronic alcoholist; in pregnancy and with oral contraceptive use; many chronic diseases including the nephrotic sydromes, neoplasia, protein-losing enteropathies (including Chrohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), peptic ulcer, thyroid disease, burns, severe skin disease, prolonged immobilization, heart failure, chronic inflammatory diseases such as the collagen diseases and other chronic catabolic states. Albumin, prealbumin, and transferrin are regarded as “negative” acute phase reactants (i.e., these proteins decrease with acute inflammatory/infectious processes).

Test Description BreastDx Clear is a multi-gene test that analyzes 16 breast cancer susceptibility genes. Although all women have some risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer at some point in their lives, having a mutation in one of the breast cancer susceptibility genes increases this risk. Men who have a mutation in one of the breast cancer susceptibility genes have an increased risk of breast, prostate, pancreatic, gastric and other cancer types.
